How much does sports surface testing cost?
Synthetic athletics tracks and artificial-turf pitches are tested against EN 14877, EN 15330-1 and the FIFA and World Athletics programmes — on site after installation and in the lab on the fibre. Here is what each test indicatively costs, and what a full field battery runs to.
Why sports surfaces are tested
A synthetic sports surface is a regulated product, not just a finish. Athletics surfaces and multi-sport areas are tested to EN 14877, artificial-turf football pitches to EN 15330-1, and many facilities additionally certify to the FIFA Quality / Quality Pro programme or to World Athletics class requirements. Post-installation testing is what backs facility acceptance, the contractor warranty and competition certification — without it, an installed surface has no objective proof it performs.
On-site tests and what each one costs
A field battery is a set of independent measurements taken on the installed surface. Indicative market ranges per test (EUR, net):

- +Vertical deformation — EN 14809 (FIFA 05): €300–€480

On-site mobilisation (the testing team travelling to the site) is typically €350–€600 and is charged once per visit regardless of how many tests are run; a written test report adds €100–€200. Travel cost falls the closer the laboratory is to the facility.
Artificial-turf fibre identification (lab)
For artificial turf, a fibre sample is cut from the pitch and identified in the laboratory — separate from the on-site battery. Indicative ranges per determination:
- +Tuft and fibre count per unit area — ISO 1763: €130–€240
- +Pile height — ISO 8543: €90–€170
- +Fibre dtex (linear density): €190–€280
- +Fibre mass, thickness and shape: €90–€220 each
- +Total surface mass — ISO 8543: €120–€220
What a full field battery costs
Bundled, an accredited post-installation package indicatively runs to:
- +Artificial-turf football pitch (EN 15330-1 / FIFA Quality): €2,000–€3,500 incl. on-site mobilisation
- +Athletics track or field (EN 14877 / World Athletics): €1,500–€2,800
- +Multi-sport synthetic surface (EN 14877, with ball rebound): €1,800–€3,000
These are LCAS benchmark ranges for accredited testing across the EU, not a quotation. The actual figure depends on the number of measurement points the surface requires, the distance the team travels and whether fibre identification is added. The lower end is realistic when an accredited laboratory is geographically close to the facility.

- A single on-site test is indicatively €150–€500 depending on the parameter; a full accredited post-installation battery runs to roughly €1,500–€3,500 including the team travelling to site, with artificial-turf football pitches at the top of that range and athletics tracks lower.

- EN 14877 covers synthetic surfaces for athletics and multi-sport areas (tracks, runways, hard synthetic surfaces); EN 15330-1 covers synthetic-turf surfaces primarily for football and multi-sport use. A facility with both a track and a turf pitch is tested against both.
- Why does travel affect the price?
- On-site testing requires the laboratory team to bring equipment to the facility. Mobilisation is charged once per visit, so the closer the accredited laboratory is to the site, the lower the travel component — which is why a nearby lab can land at the bottom of the benchmark range.
